So I just started working on an epic fantasy novel series based on ideas for various short stories I had on the back burner for ages. The general concept is the development of this fictional continent based on Eastern European, particularly Russia. So my problem as a writer is that I’m a top down thinker. I like coming up with concepts massive in scope then slowly figuring out all the little bits and pieces until I reach the foundation of that concept. Well, not so much the foundation, more like all the elements that build up to that concept making sense.
I guess that can be its foundation but I think of it more like it’s purpose, the reason why writing this story is worthwhile. So the original idea for this series is to work on writing fantasy by telling the story of this fictional people as those I’m their historian recording events from their past. Already seems like a huge undertaking but then I thought about what sort of conflicts they’d engage in and with conflict came other factions then whole countries until now I mapped out an entire world consisting of this large continent and even a few island chains. Now the problem came when I came to the realization that all I did was create this vague world with names of people and places that have no details. They’re just these nebulous things with no history or culture behind them.
So now I began studying different countries while also becoming inspired by games like Skyrim and Age of Empires 2 and 3. I decided to make the predominate religion center on magic and of course, once you introduce magic to the mix things get even more complicated. Now I’m looking at history, culture, mythology, magic and several fantasy stories I have laying around. It seemed over time all I’ve been doing is reading and brainstorming without actually writing a story. Which can be a problem if you’re trying to be a writer.
After thinking about it for so long, I decided to cut the crap and get to writing which is why I’m hear. I narrowed down the focus to just a group of heroes on a journey to face the wizard seeking to take control of the world. Pretty generic right? However, I’m concentrating on this world’s early history as empires are forming and everyone is experiencing the dawn of a classical age of growth and prosperity. A key figure in the story and for our heroes is a young man who had become a social pariah but in his isolation he discovered how to harness magic. Sorcery at this point in the series is in its infancy, many myths are formed around mages and the course of history changes forever. The wizard is but one of many mages who appears in this time but now the others must either choose to aid the heroes as this tyrant conquers people with his power or side with him so they can gain power themselves. That’s where the focus of the story lies, how people in this world react to the emergence of magic.
Let me know what you guys think because I just started writing short excerpts so nothing is set in stone. Feel free to tell me what you think, I’ll see you all around.
